Kirk,

Is this a Bridgestone Excedra G702 Valk-sized rear tire? I had one of those. I only got a little over 11,000 miles out of it, but that was probably back when I was taking Honda's recommendation to change rear tires when they had 2 mm of tread left.

These days I run the rear tires 1000 miles past when they have no tread left in the center track and funnily I have never slipped because I had no center tread on a rear tire, with either bike I own. Unlike the front tire, which for me usually wears out off-center first, the rear tire usually has plenty of tread on the sides after the center tread wears down to nothing. It is that side tread that keeps the rear tire stable in the turns and the center tread does not seem to matter that much. However, I usually do not ride on wet roads with a tire worn down that much, and I never take a trip with a tire that is worn to nothing in the center.

For comparison, I got about 13,000 miles out of a rear Dunlop D206 Elite when changing it out with 2 mm of thread left measured in the center groove. Good luck with the Bridgestone tire. I will be interested to hear how long it lasts.
