My son and I left Sturgis, and it was a beautiful mid 80's day. As we crossed the state line and headed towards the Devil's Tower, we were in and out of brief showers. But then it got nice again...for a bit.
Montana was ok at first. Then the sun went in behind the thunderheads, but we were staying dry. Then the wind started. 15 miles later I realized we were getting too cold and were too far from the next stop. Out came sweatshirts and gloves. We got to Broadus, where I decided to fuel before Jacob and I fueled ourselves. It started pouring while we were under the canopy.
I drove to the cafe we had passed. We got warm and full, and since it hadn't let up in the rain department I went out and grabbed rain gear. The first 20 miles it was raining so hard that it looked like the rain was bouncing off the pavement a foot. I was going to stop in Volborg, but what I assumed was a town, was just a sign at the side of the road, 1 house and a closed party store!
The sheer beauty of the scenery really helped me to not focus on my discomfort. I was really having a hard time believing I was properly clothed, yet cold in August. The 83 miles we traveled was pretty much empty, with very few vehicles headed either way. Luckily it stopped raining while we were warming up in the gas station in Miles City. The temp reading in their sign out front said 56 degrees.
Putz, I'm with you, once I decide to ride, the weather isn't of any concern. Must be a snow-state thing.

P.S. Anyone else ever ran into what appeared to be a town on the map that wasn't? I am concerned for fuel reasons.
