If I understand right, the diesel motor drives a pump not the vehicle, so it gets great milage. The hydraulic pump turns a motor/gear/pto hooked directly to the wheels. Speed is increased by increasing pump speed.

Sounds like a lot of oomphs on the low end but a whole lot of problems coming up to speed. That might be why he compared it to a trials bike.
