Yesterday was a great day of both riding and spending time with the family in a place we have had so much fun in our lives. Other than a black pick-up truck that probably did not see my little headlight in three lanes of Norfolk rush hour traffic and consequently pulled into my lane it was a fantastic ride first because of the thrill of spanning the 17.6 miles of the Chesapeke Bay-Tunnel Bridge and then serenely gliding across the 17 miles of the mouth of the Delaware Riveron the Cape May-Lewes Ferry finally ending up at the gorgeous beach house my mother rented for the week in Ocean City, NJ where besides my mother and her husband awaited but also my siblings, their spouses and children created a party atmosphere. We walked on the beach and on the boardwalk. We went body surfing and we enjoyed a delicious meal together. It is a blast. I must admit a bit of trepidation about riding in potentially high winds across the 15.6 miles of open ocean and also about spending two miles in a tunnel under the ocean. As it turned out the bridge was not long enough since the winds were not bothersome and I greatly enjoyed watching the wave swells, the boats and the very distance horizon. The tunnel was no big deal either since it was well lit and I did not have sunglasses on on a mostly cloudy day. I also had trepidatioon about securing my motorcycle on the ferry ride. The Cape May, NJ-Lewes, DE Ferry uses wooden wedges in front of the front tire and behind the rear tire. There were no tie-downs. Since no other motorcycles were on the Ferry I put wedges on all sides of the rear tire and on three sides of the front tire. With just one and two foot swells I did not need that much. I would be concerned if there were large swellls with the bike falling over. Otherwise the cool water breeze made the 80 minute passage a joy. Looking across one of the two one mile long stretches where the tunnel goes under the Atlantic Ocean. Chesapeke Bay-Tunnel Bridge. The Herring River, Berlin, MD (just west of Ocean City, MD) From the causeway into Ocean City, MD This fast boat went speeding by the Cape May-Lewes Ferry. The lighthouse at the end of the breakwater wall on the Lewes, Delaware side of the 17 mile wide mouth of the Delaware River. The Delaware River is so easily navigable that the massive port of Philadelphia is 100 miles upstream. A pleasure boat goes speeding across the wake of the much larger Ferry. My Nighthawk blocked up on the front of the Ferry. I was third on after the two government vans to the left of my motorcycle. I also enjoyed being third off and first out on the road ahead of the traffic. My mother rented the second floor of this house for the week. It is really nice with 4 bedrooms a vaulted ceiling in the living room and front dining area. It also has a nice porch and an observation deck on the roof (good for watching sunrises and sunsets). More to follow...
