OK guys finally got some time to work on the shifter issue.  I installed the new clutch switch according to Guns' instructions, and he's right it's a very easy job.  One other thing to note is that the switch is "live" outside the handlebars....the button on the back is naturally "out" so that allows you to start in gear.  by installing the switch you are giving the clutch lever the job of depressing the switch in static situations, and then allowing the button to come out while squeezing the lever.  also, be careful about how far you push the switch into the housing, not far enough and it wont work, too far and you push it out the other side.  you can hear a tiny "click" when it's in the proper place.  Thanks again everybody for contributing to this thread, another repair job instructon to live online forever!
