Have you ever replaced your fuel filter? To answer your question....yes...running it completely dry can take a while for it to fill the bowls again. Pump has to be running to do so. Pump only runs for few seconds when ignition turned on, then shuts off. Turn ignition on for 5 seconds, then off several times w/o trying to start it so that the pump can pick up fuel and get it delivered to carb bowls again. Filter is ahead of the fuel pump, so if it is a little dirty, it can take a little longer for the fuel to reach the pump.

Here's what I do when I run it out of gas. Whenever I 1st feel a sputter, I quickly switch to reserve while coasting in gear. Usually it will start before the bike comes to a halt.
