Posts: 9807 01/08/09 2:59 PM	Tags : None The buzzing has already started for this years 27th Annual Americade to be held in Lake George, New York this coming June 1st thru 6th, 2009. Many of you already know much about this event, but for those of you who don't, there is just too much to tell you, so instead I'll give you the link to the Americade Website and let you read for yourself. The Americade also maintains an Americade Message Board that has a lot of detailed information about all aspects of the event from a participants point of view. As is my custom I'll create and maintain a list of the HSATF forum members who have announced that they are planning to attend with the dates of their arrival and departure. This is a week long event and many members only stay for a portion of the event. 2009 Americade attendee list updated: April 23rd, to remove forum member "rick" from list of attendees. alepel - NY - May 31st. to June 6th. As a first timer I don't know ware to start. and they haven't released 2009 details yet. I think I remember from past years most skip the organised rides and just go to the vendors/demo-rides on one or two days. Tony

Posts: 7627 01/09/09 12:26 PM	Tony, If you think Americade's website is disorganized, what would you expect of their ons-site registration? Actually I did not find their registration disorganized, but compared to the Hoot it is slow going. There are 3 times the participants, yet the number people working Registration is 1/2 what the Hoot has. You can do the Math. Expect to spend a minimum of 1/2 hour in line and it can be several hours depending on when you register. The two places I have stayed when attending Americade include the Red Roof Inn near Albany's airport and a cabin just down the road from Roaring Brook Ranch (where the demo rides are). The inexpensive Red Roof Inn was about 60 miles away and close to several restaurants. I did not mind riding from there to the Lake George every day. I was planning on riding everyday anyhow. The cabin not far from Roaring Brook Ranch was in a beautiful location on a lake. Some of the views were serene. However, since the cabin did not have a TV I ended up riding home in lots of rains until I was waterlogged and had to stop mid-afternoon. Had I been staying in a place with a TV I would have watched the weather forecast and found that I could have ridden 1 hour west to avoid the rain and ridden all day. Since you are planning on staying all week you probably will be able to find a place that is close to the action at a reasonable price. I would not recommend staying at any hotel in Lake George on one of the main streets. Loud pipes and burnouts will keep you from sleeping. I probably will stay 3 nights at the Red Roof Inn in Albany. That will give me two days to play at Americade, then I will head down to visit my family in NJ on the way back to SC. Fred

We do that so as to be out of town when the heaviest of the crowds show up. Everyone will have their own schedules for the event, but as you know in the past we try to have at least one dinner together. I'll set that up if everyone likes. I was thinking the trip from lee parks class to Amercade would be a breeze, not that I mind. Fred do you have any ideas to avoid takeing the freeway? NJ turnpike is not a good motorcycle road . Alepel you have be thinking about leaving early too and taking the long way home. Especially since I'll be there for the (hopefully; right?) uncrowded first part of the week. Posts: 9807 01/09/09 3:03 PM	Tony....if memory serves me correctly you live somewhere near Cleveland. If you leave on Saturday you're welcome to travel with my brother and I as far as Rochester. You're welcome to my guest room and you can finish remainder of your trip on Sunday (approx 4-5 hrs). My brother and I have about a 6 hour trip from Lake George to Rochester on backroads, but you might better that time on the slabway (US90). But I am going to have at least one friend with me so we'll probably round up a hotel in the area. Thanks again for the offer that's what makes this place great! Hey I can see doing a bit of HSAT group riding. I don't think we should necessary resign ourselves to just a dinner. Being there all week I'm just planing on hitting the expo Early in the week then spend the other days riding round wherever in the mountains. Tony

Tony, In 2006 Andy and I went up through MD & PA on beautiful, not heavily travelled routes. Then, like in 2004, we went through the Catskill Mountains on a gorgeous route. Not to worry, we do not have to travel on I-95 or any other less than desireable road. Fred

Alain, It is a long trip and difficult to justify the 6 days of vacation required considering there are so many quality roads within 4 hours of my home (including the Dragon) unless it is actually the equal of 3 trips as this one is. I am really looking forward to taking Lee Parks Total Control Advanced Riding Clinic. That's about halfway there (427 miles from my house including 199 miles of Blue Ridge Parkway) in Frederick, MD just 2 days before Americade's start. Having been to Americade twice I know it is a great motorcycle rally set in a gorgeous region. There's no hardship attending once I get myself up that way. Nobody who likes demo rides can argue that Americade is the premiere event for that. Only Daytona's Bike Week has as many, but clearly the Adirondacks have more fun roads for demoing all those shiny, new motorcycles. Coming home I can stop by and visit my family in southern New Jersey. I always love to see them and do not get to spend nearly enough time with them, so this is a great opportunity. I feel conflicted in saying this, but thanks to the cancellation of the Hoot I've got 3 trips rolled up into one to look forward to come June. Fred

Tony, My recommendation for a route from Frederick, MD is to go on US 15 until we get past Harrisburg. It is a pleasant, not heavily-travelled route that avoids most of the traffic congestion. Northeast Pennsylvania has numerous small roads through the mountains and lots of alternate routes along the same general corridor. We can take whatever looks best to get us up to NY 30 which skirts the western edge of Catskill Park. I've been that way twice. It is a beautiful ride. From there it is still backroads all the way to Lake George, or if you are in a hurry you can jump on the I-87 for that last 60 miles north of Albany. Fred

We usually take a nice course through the Adirondacks home. But from the Rochester/Finger lakes area you've got some nice choices. First off you can stay north and travel the Lake Ontario shore line. Relatively straight ,low traffic and quiet. Then there is Rt's 5&20 It takes you through many small towns on rolling hills and curves through what used to be a major highway now turned scenic byway. Lots of resturanrts and motels and a few scenic attractions like Letchworth park just a short ride south. A third choice is to cut south through the Finger lakes between Seneca and Canandaguia Lakes. There are several great riding roads heading south that take you through New York wine country. Its also the home of Watkins Glen Raceway and the Glen Curtiss Air and Motorcyle museum in Hammandsport. Rt 54A from Branchport to Hammondsport is a wondeful riding road. Anyone of these roads will lead you south into Pennsylvania Once there you can head west through Northern PA. through several great riding roads leading you right into eastern Ohio and even better roads.( Of course you know that. ). Anyway we'd be glad to be your guides through our part of the state if you're planning and travelling back with us. Let us know .Phil.

HSATF 1st Officer Posts: 931 01/12/09 3:51 PM	Fred, Al and Phil, I've checked out the Map and I'm seeing it! All that needs to happen now is for the snow to melt. I'm starting to pull together my plan. Fred you may remember Sean from last years' hoot. He is going to come with me on Friday and we will stay with our high school buddy mike who lives near DC. Sean doesn't have the bread to take the Lee Parks class but Mike is petitioning the wife to free up the money. I'm trying to get Mike to join us for the trip north but his is in the Presidents own Marine core band and doesn't really know how busy he will be until Obama takes office. Under Bush he plays more video games then trumpet but back under Clinton they worked every day, he is guessing Obama may be the same. At any rate Sean will be attending Americade too. I need to figure out where to stay. I think I want to be closer then Albany but not right downtown for sure. Americade is supposed to have a both at the Cleveland motorcycle show in 3 weeks hopefully they will have the 2009 info posted by then. Tony

Posts: 7627 01/12/09 4:47 PM	Tony, How could I forget Sean? You and he lost big-time at blackjack down on Volunteer Landing last June. How far from DC does Mike live? It is 51 miles from the center of DC to the center of Frederick, MD. I plan on staying in Frederick probably two nights, Friday and Saturday. I was thinking about whether to take off after class and ride for a couple of hours up into PA, but after 9 hours of Lee Parks class it may be wisest to rest the rest of the evening and get an early start in Sunday morning. It's 368 miles to Albany and 426 miles to Lake George from Frederick. I would not stay in downtown Albany either. During the 2004 Americade and also last year while attending a training course in Bolton Landing I stayed at the Red Roof Inn by the Albany Airport. It was just a 100 yards from the entrance to I-87. There was no horrible traffic and when going to Lake George I was always going in the opposite direction to rush hour traffic. If I were going to attend Americade for the whole week I don't know if I would want to stay 57 miles way, but as it is I expect to be in Lake George 2 days, 3 at the most. I do not mind riding up I-87 two or three times. Fred

Gonna need to think that over as I think an ealry start on Sunday is the way to go. I know from past trips to mike's I'd get more sleep and be less hung over staying at a Fredrick hotel. Posts: 7627 01/13/09 12:25 PM	Tony, During Americade in 2006 Andy and I rented a cabin about 5 miles west of Roaring Brook Ranch (on the same road). The place was reasonably priced, had two bedrooms, one bathroom and a kitchen. You could park your bike under a covered structure with a paved floor. There were canoes and row boats you could take out on Lake Vanare. There was no TV or radio. The place is called Hide-A-Way. HSATF Tail Gunner Posts: 182 01/18/09 12:40 PM	Tony, if you check the Americade motel list you'll notice that there are some reasonable rates in motels surrounding the Lake George area. Towns Like Boltons landing, Warrensberg just to mention a few. Staying in the Village can be madness as the crowds get pretty thick by Thursday. By being just outside of town you can skirt around on I-87 and come into town from the south which is alot easier to get to the Tour expo, Roaring Brook Ranch( where the demo rides leave from) and parking in the park near the lake. Also check the Diamond Point ,area as it is flooded with motels of all prices. Hope to see you there. Phil.
