Domino,
The tire manufacturers and other motorcycle industry gurus will have you believe that you have to change front and rear tires at the same time, that you have to use the same manufacturer's tires and the same tread pattern. That may be true for a race bike, but all the tires that fit on a T are so far from being fully utilized that it just does not matter. Compared to a race bike, the acceleration, braking and lean angle of a cruiser like the T are miles from the edge. You can mix tread patterns, patterns from different manufacturers, it does not matter. And you certainly do not have to change both tires at the same time. Do whatever is convenient, or most cost effective, or whatever strikes your fancy. It doesn't matter. Your T will still perform fantastically.

My questions are: 1) what is my total speedo error with these tires (I know there is the usual speedometer error and a correction factor for the shorter tire), 2) if my speedometer says I 've gone 100 miles how many miles have I actually ridden, and 3) is my engine now running faster or slower at 65 mph then before the change. My old tires, which had 12k on them, were the factory size Dunlops.

Gary,
Actually the 170/70-16 is 26.2" in diameter whereas the 180/60-16 is 25.2". Both the Wing's front and rear tires are smaller than the T's tires. That makes the speedometer and odometer errors larger and the engine speed runs faster at the same ground speed. Please check the calculations below for errors. Thanks.

I just want to say that I have many times run different brand tires on a motorcycle, and never really found it to be problem....until this last time. I had a Dunlop Elite 3 on the front and a Avon Venom R on the rear. Its hard to explain exactly what it was that was different, but they just never felt like they worked together very well. The Tourer handled differently than it used to. I was thinking that it was the 'worn-in' mileage of the T that might have been making it feel that way, but my 200+ mile ride on the new matched Avon Cobras yesterday convinced me that it was the mismatched tires. The difference is very noticeable. I'm very impressed with the Avon Cobras, but I'm sure it was the specific mismatched tires I took off my T that made me feel the oddity. Like I said before, I never had a problem on any other mismatched set, but the Dunlop Elite 3 on the front and the Avon Venom R on the rear are not a good combination on the T. That's 40+ years of riding experience I offer you guys.
