Air breather bracket |
Lead | ||
|
I have been unable to find one of the school bell air breathers. Has anyone made a bracket on their own? Or can someone send me a picture of the bracket so I
can attempt to make one and mount my own breather to it.

I don't have a picture or a bracket to snap a picture of, but I have mounted 2 of these and it's a fairly simple bracket. The bracket bolts to the
heads and uses the same holes as the faux fins socket head bolts do. These are the removable part of the head fins on each side. There are 2 of these bolts on
one head and just one on the other. Using longer versions of these bolts, the bracket bolts in between the fins in a non-symmetrical triangle, and protrudes
out tripod style to a 1" (outside diameter) washer. On the back side of the washer, there is a threaded nut welded over the hole. To clear the fins before
angling the tripod legs in toward the washer, you weld on some small diameter metal tubing to each of the tripods legs (about 1" long each). Steel brake
line should do well for this as long as the longer socket head bolts will fit through it, and the outside diameter is small enough to fit between the fins. One
picture of the bracket would better show you what you need, but hope this gives you a pretty good idea of what you need.

Lakejet wrote: Lakejet....I went through the same thing as you earlier this year. I was convinced I would have to make my own bracket and and I started the planning to make one all the while I was looking on ebay for one. Actually during my monitoring of ebay I saw three of them come up for sale. The bidding came be fierce and I lost out to what I believe were snipers. My point in telling you all of this is that they do still come up. You've got to monitor ebay every day. Making one is pretty straightforward. I had some pictures of the brackets I got from a forum member but deleted them because of their .jpg file size was too big for me to hang onto. Sorry Good luck and keep your eyes peeled on ebay. I know that you'll find one.

What search terms would one use to locate such a breather on Ebay? Was there a particular manufacturer, brand or model name? Part number?

It was called a "Horn Cover" by them, for whatever reason. When you search for these, use both terms because some folks still refer to them as
breather covers as well as a half dozen other names. There was one other manufacturer of these, so don't dwell too much the Cobra name when searching.
You'll get a lot of actual horn cover adds when searching with that term, but eventually one of these will show up.
BTW, the bracket for the '94 and older VT1100's is a little different and will not fit the '95 and up, but the cover itself will and you might be able to modify the bracket, or make your own. Stan |

When I was searching for mine I was looking for the Cobra brand. I come to find out that there were two versions of the Cobra brand fake air cleaner cover for
our Tourers. The part number by the way for Cobra was 06-0130. The earlier version had a two bolt mounting bracket. The later models had a three bolt mounting
bracket. As best as I could learn the earlier two bolt version vibrated too much and was known to break the bolts off the cylinder head. The three bolt version
provided a much more stable mounting. Most of the Cobra models you'll find today have the three bolt bracket.
When I was really desparate looking for one of these Cobra Air Horn Covers as they are packaged as I used the words "Cobra Chrome" in my ebay search. Admittedly it gave me a lot to look at but I never missed a single listing. Using this I even found one of the milled covers for the Cobra Air Horn Cover for only $19. In fact to be honest I found two of them.
