So I'd been wanting a new helmet for a while, as the THH full face I bought when I started was looking much the worse for wear, on top of never venting very well and being a little tight to my nose & jaw. I discovered a while ago that there was a discount helmet/jacket etc. store here in Rochester, about 5 minutes from my house, and I'd stopped in a few times to check it out.
About 2 months or so ago, I tried on a Vega Summit II modular and just about fell in love. It had plenty of room for my jaw (and beard), a snap for the excess chinstrap (something lacking in the THH), fit just snugly enough. AND it was ECE certified. BUT it was kind of an unnecessary expense at the time.
Since then, I ran into some of my first really really hot & steamy weather on the bike, and decided that I needed something in between my leather and a t-shirt. I also don't have raingear, so I looked a bit into some of the Tourmaster convertibles, but again didn't really find anything I could afford. Well, lo and behold, I was back in that shop a couple of weeks ago and found that they had a Vega Merit jacket (I swear this isn't an ad, just a coincidence), which is mesh with a liner and a pocket in the back that stores a rain jacket. Tried it on, talked to the proprietor, and got him to knock a not inconsiderable amount off the combined total. I'd been working an awful lot of overtime the couple of weeks before, and could just barely swing it. And now I feel a lot better with a jacket & armor between me & the pavement and a helmet that fits me and is pretty comfortable.
