Have any of you Razorbacks ever tackled the Magazine Mountain Scenic Byway? For those of you non Arkansas denizens the aforementioned byway coils 28 miles through a portion of the Ozark National Forest between Paris, AR and Havana, AR. There are a couple of switchbacks, bunches of forewarned 10mph to 30 mph curves and 4 or 5 panoramic, scenic overlooks. Sunday, with the temperature close to 60F, I saw a dozen or so motorcycles gracing the roads in northwest Arkansas. One of them was a BMW Boxer Sport-Tourer navigating heavily sanded turns on the Byway. BTW, can anybody tell me why Arkansas' DOT uses so much sand on the road it sometimes looks as though they are trying to turn it back into a dirt road?
The Byway goes by the highest point in Arkansas, Mountain Magazine, which for the record has an elevation above sea level of 2753 feet. That may not sound like much but it a great place for gaggles of fun curves. I only wish it had less sand on it and I was on one of my bikes. Even so it was fun sliding around those tight turns in my Malibu rental car. One warning though, guard rails are sparse. There was one every once in a while but most of those severe dropoffs were naked other than the trees that possibly could stop you from having the ride of your life, over the cliff and straight down the mountainside.
If anybody gets a chance to try Magazine Mountain Scenic Byway I think you will like it...
