I bought my Tourer new in 1999 and now have about 41,000 miles on it (mostly surburban commuting). I live in Northern New Jersey and ride 12 months a year. The bike has DG Hardkrome light bars, Cobra engine guards, floorboards, Rifle lowers, Clearview shield, etc.
Last week, I noticed a clanking sound coming from the engine when I started it up. (It was 4 degrees outside, but the temperature has never been a problem in the past.) I had it towed to the dealer and feared the worst (possible blown engine, trans, etc.) The dealer called last night and said that there was some piece of the exhaust system broken off that was making the noise. The replacement exhaust part is quite expensive, but much less than an engine rebuild. (Whew!) So, I dropped by to see if there might be some extra parts lying around. I'm learning a lot on this forum (more than I've found on other forums.) One thing I've learned is that the stock muffler is actually more popular than I thought. I've never had the urge to make the bike louder, so it's reassuring to know that there are others like me who appreciate a quiet, smooth ride.
By the way. I'm sure that some of you think I'm nuts for riding in 5-10 degree weather. I'm addicted to this bike, and for me the temperature doesn't matter, so long as there is no snow or ice on the road. When I put on my "really cold weather gear" I don't notice the temperature until I remove my helmet, walking in to my office.
Yes, the people I work with also think I'm nuts.
