Mitch Boehm of Motorcyclist magazine, says to avoid in-town tickets to keep your bike's transmission in a gear or two lower than normal. It's too easy to generate more speed than you can feel in the saddle when you are cruising in 4th or 5th gear. The ride is smooth and the engine is hardly revving. By downshifting a gear or two the sound and vibrations will be higher so you will be more aware of your speed and the need to keep your speed down in-town.
The only caveat is if you have an aftermarket exhaust. In that case, lowering the gear and raising the revs may get you a loudness ticket instead.
