Posts: 256 12/05/03 2:26 AM Second Officer	Tags : None I talked to my local "wrench" today and I asked about the Havoline anti-freeze.It seems to be the silicates in anti-freeze that harms the water pump impellor. Silicates,he explained,are actually small beads of glass added in anti-freeze to clean the system.Not good for plastic impellers,though. What disturbed me is he didn't use distilled water, said there wasn't enough volume of water in the little radiator to matter. So I'm draining and flushing my cooling system for this reason alone. I'm figuring I neeed to drain it,put distilled water back in & run the engine until the thermo opens and gets everything circulated,then drain the water. Afterward it WILL be filled with the Honda 50/50 antifreeze mix. Any tips on this?

Posts: 5701 12/05/03 8:03 PM	Don't over-tighten the coolant drain bolt. If you do the steel drain bolt will strip the aluminum threads from the water pump housing resulting in hundreds of dollars to drop the engine and replace the water pump. Also the manual says that after replacing the coolant to leave the filler cap off while you rev the engine a few times to get rid of entrained air in the coolant system. Good luck 2Smooth! Fred

Posts: 5701 12/08/03 4:33 AM	Kenny, I did do a fair amount of searching both on the Internet and at a couple of local auto supply stores. I could not find any type of freeze plug made is such a small size. But JB Weld's WaterWeld seems to be doing the trick. I cut off a piece of the epoxy putty, mixed it until it was just one color and very pliable, rolled it up in the shape of a 6 mm diameter plug and inserted it into the water pump's coolant drain hole. The instructions said the putty would be rock-hard in 20 minutes. I let it sit for an hour and three-quarters. It certainly seemed rock hard, so I filled up the T's coolant system and started up the bike. No leaks, so I took a little test ride. Again no leaks, so I plan to ride to work tomorrow. My fingers are crossed, but I think that stuff is rock hard and will stay in place forever. I will probably replace the water pump next coolant change, i.e. in another 24,000 miles. Thanks to Wyoming Jim for saving me a few hundred dollars. Fred

Not wanting to remove any bolts that weren't necessary, and looking the shop manual over, I just pulled the lower hose off the water pump. Seemed to drain most, if not all, of the system. Don't want to say this is a "proper" way to do it, but an alternative. .........Pacman

Posts: 114 12/13/03 9:27 PM	It's the hose you've got to fight with every time you change the oil. It goes from the bottom of the radiator to the water pump. System appears to be very similar to a car. So, if you open it up at the lowest point then most of it should drain. Or at least that was my way of thinkin. Pacman

Posts: 489 12/14/03 1:32 AM	If you change the coolant on a regular basis you should not have to get it all out. The coolant should not have broken down enough to require complete replacement. You will be adding enough new coolant to do the job. Larry

Posts: 5701 09/04/07 11:41 AM	Yesterday I replaced the coolant for the first time in 3 years & 10 months. Three years and ten months ago when I stripped the drain bolt threads I had been wondering why I even was replacing the coolant. It looked brand-new. Yesterday, I was again wondering the same thing. After almost 4 years and 22,000 miles the old coolant looked the same color and consistency as the new coolant I put in. What's the point? BTW, the JB Waterweld I plugged the drain hole with has not leaked a drop of coolant in the almost 4 years. It's good stuff! Fred

HSATF 2nd Officer Posts: 423 09/04/07 1:57 PM Tail Gunner	The info about the JB waterweld is really good. I changed my coolant before my recent big trip, draining via the screw on the waterpump, and had no problems..thankfully !!!I used a pre-packaged ethelyne glycol-silicate free 50/50 mix. It was about half of the comparable Honda product $$ and met, so far as I could determine, all of the Honda specs. My local mechanic said it would be just fine and so far (about 5000 miles) it has been....Bob <><
