This is marginally technical, this deals with the stock mufflers and exhaust system on the Tourer.
My Tourer lasted only about 100 miles before the stock exhaust came off, and a Samson turnout went on her. The Samson pipes were left over from my original ACE. They were always a bit loud, especially as I leave for work at 6am. (I live in a rural area)
I finally aquired a set of mufflers from another Tourer. These were older and had been used for some time.
I brought them to work and we cut the exhaust end off of the muffler, after removing the chrome covers of course.
There are 3 baffles in the muffler itself, and the short tailpipe is like a little glasspack muffler.
There are 2 baffles, just solid plates close to the inlet end. And one plate about 6 inches in from the exhaust end. Each plate has a one pipe thru it that extends each side an inch or two. There are no direct paths thru the muffler.
We cut the end cap off of the exhaust end, so it could be easily welded back on.
We also cut out the little tailpipe that sticks out and replaced it with a piece of 1 3/4" exhaust pipe.
We also removed the rearmost baffle.
The baffles are only tacked in and can be removed easily enough.
Well all this was put back together and the welds painted. So I was ready to remove the Samson pipe and install the modified cans.
I was actually worried that I was going to end up with some hokey sounding exhaust. So I still have my original stock mufflers if needed.
Also in case you have never looked, the left side exhaust actually goes back forward in the routing of the pipes.
I started the bike and was amazed that we had hardly made any difference in the sound level. The tone was a lot deeper.
I have mixed feelings about the new sound. I didn't want it really loud like before, but I really don't like a silent bike either.
You can "feel" the rumbling of the new exhaust, but there is no "hard" sound coming from the pipes.
To complete the modification I need to get a set of chrome extensions for the now visible tailpipes. I may get fishtails later on.
There may still be another modification to alter the sound before I am done.
To qualify my views on loud pipes, I am not a hard rider and I don't get on the bike just to make noise. I do like a bike that makes a bit of noise, but nothing obnoxious. The Samsons were a bit loud, and they were baffled. I have had unbaffled pipes that were way too loud.
Also since I have the loudest bike on most trips thru deer country, I am always elected to ride point...
