motorcycle lift? |

does anyone have a motorcycle lift? i just bought one at sears was on sale for $60. i thought i could rig up some kind of spacer jig since the t motor extends below the frame, but for the life of me i cant figure out a good option. any ideas? the lift works great on my friends vtx1800 cause the frame is the first point of contact with the lift, however on the T, the frame is about 2.5 inchs up above the motor. kind of a bad design. really never payed that much attention to it before. if anyone has ideas or suggestions please help me out. the lift is basic, just 2 fork arms extend under bike and you just jack it up, thx for any input. mick

Mick, I have a motorcycle lift for which I bought a special adapter for the T. That company is now out of business, but of all the motorcylists that have bought a standard motorcycle lift and made adapters for the standard lift, it seems they fall in two categories. One category of lift owners cuts wooden blocks to size and fits them to four places between the lift and the frame. The other category of motorcyclists welds up metal framework to take up the verticle space between the lift bars and the frame. Everybody that has done either one has reported good results, i.e. they can raise their T's and do whatever maintenance they want to. The only thing I would caution you about it is once the lift is up, make sure to secure the bike to the lift using 4 tie-downs.

If enough T owners are interested there is a young company that will build you an adapter for your jack. They already are making and selling adapters for the Valkyrie on ebay. They do not currently make one for the T, but will design one if enough are interested. You can e-mail them at;

Hi Mick,
I built mine for my Sears lift. I had a pretty nice write-up in here, but it was lost in the hack attack. I used 4" C-channel and 3" angle iron. Because the dang bike is so low to the ground, I couldn't make all the lift points permanent or they wouldn't slide under the bike. I welded three, but not the left front one. I ran two beads of weld down the edge of the channel to support the lift point. I roll the lift under the bike with the adapters on it, then when in place, I place the left front piece on. Here are some pictures if they help...Lift adapter. I have used it for all my work on the bike; however, because of the left front point not being secured, you cannot jerk the bike around real hard. Never use a lift without tying the bike securely. I didn't get a patent, so you're welcome to use this design if you want. ![]() Gary

Hey Gary,
How much would you charge to make another one and ship it to Michigan? You might be able to make a couple bucks here. Alan |

God Alan, if you would have asked me a few weeks back I could have done it for almost nothing. Now I can't do it all. My health has gotten so bad that I finally, at my wife's urging (nagging), I got rid of all my little 'therapy tools'. I had all of the scrap metal and wood hauled away and we had a huge garage sale. I sold my torches and mig, with all of the accouterments. I can't hardly make breakfast any more.
![]() If you can view my photos, I suggest that you download them and show them to someone with welding capabilities up there. You can get the materials real cheap out of a recycling place. I don't know what else to tell you, Alan. ![]() Gary

Gary, I am real sorry to hear your health is limiting your activities, particularly in regards to motorcycling. At least your fingers and wit still work.

Yeah Fred, I've been kind of hiding it from you guys. I have found faltering a lot harder to fess up to than I had considered. Social security has granted me disability. Even that word is hard to deal with. I've just always been so active. I keep forcing myself to get on Dixie (that's my T for those of you that don't know. geez
) whenever I have a day that's better than usual. They are few and far between any more, but I still have them. This entire summer I've only been able to roll up a little over 500 miles. A far cry from the 7K I racked up two summers ago, huh? (The question is rhetorical, guys.)Gary

I made my own spacer out of a block of mahogany. I do lift my bike on the engine block in front and my spacer catches both frame rails behind the oil filter in the rear. Works great, costs me nothin'.

Sorry to hear about all the forced changes. Health issues are bad enough but when you have to forsake what makes you happy it only makes things worst. A man should never have to give up his tools.
Good luck to you and ride when you can. It'll keep you young.
