clutch question? |
Lead | ||
|
thanks in advance for the help. I have a 98t and have a slipping clutch, i have already adjusted it out as far as it will go. I would like to know what components i should replace (friction discs, springs, metal plates ect...) i have done harley clutches before but never a honda clutch so any advice on what to expect would be great.

I have never replaced the clutch in a VT1100 either, but have been into the case when replacing the primary drive gear. I have a factory shop manual on CD if you want me to e-mail some pages from it. Or, you can go to BikeBandit .com and see the break out. Let me know if I can help.

If your metal plates are in good shape and flat, you can just change the friction discs and install new springs. The stock springs are quite weak to allow for an easy clutch lever pull, but this also can lead to slippage under heavy load. I would recommend installing a set of barnett kevlar friction discs and barnett heavy duty springs. I have never had to replace them on my T yet , but I did on my 83 shadow and the barnett parts work fantastic! You will experience a bit harder clutch lever pull but it is worth it, slip wont be a problem under load with these parts installed. ride safe, Terry

I got stranded today on a ride and just got hauled home by a buddy with a p/u because the clutch was slipping so bad I couldn't go over 15 mph. I did field adjustment on the cable to get that much out of it. My bet is on the clutch plates/springs. Any ideas if it could be something else?
As recomended earlier, barnett kevlar friction discs and barnett heavy duty springs will work better than stock. Where can I buy these? I need to get repairs done quickly because we have a ride next Saturday. (guess it was better this weekend than next). Dano

Dano, sorry to hear about you getting stranded. Have you tried a major clutch adjustment? Do do so you would have to remove the left side cover. It may not work, but it does have a lot more adjustment than the clutch lever adjustment. It could be worth a try because that is your fastest solution if it works.
If you do need a new clutch, the first question to ask is if you like the light clutch lever pull that the OEM clutch gives you. If so, order another Honda clutch. If you want a heavier clutch you can get barnett kevlar friction discs and barnett heavy duty springs at: www.motorcyclestorehouse....ctbrand=15 or street.parts-unlimited.co...86/2524351 or www.parts411.com/acb/webp...ID=8&DID=9 EBC at: street.parts-unlimited.co...67/2519379 Fred |

Thanks for the quick response Fred. I did pull the cover and adjust the lower cable nuts on the road. That's what I thought it was first because the lever was tight. I took it to the point that the cable was loose in the linkage and then snugged it back up. That is part of what has me confused...why did the cable get tight when the clutch was slipping. I am a shade tree mechanic at best. I reviewed the shop manual and changing the plates/springs should not be too hard.
I am considering the aftermarket discs because I ride two up most of the time. Any more thoughts/suggestions are welcome. Dano |

change your oil and filter after you replace the clutch. All that burned off friction material goes into the oil and clogs the filter.
as the friction plates wear out, the pressure plate sits lower on the clutch pack, subsequently pulling tighter on the cable. duke |

I ordered Barnett springs, plates & discs along with a gasket. Will give them a shot. I have new oil on the way as well and will pick up a new torque wrench tonight or tomorrow. Any tips on changing them will be greatly appreciated. I have the service manual which makes a lot of difference. I will tear into it tonight.

btw,
What oil are you using? Hopefully it is not a 10w-30 grade or lighter auto oil. The friction modifiers added in those oils to help improve gas mileage are suspected of causing clutch slippage in motorcycles. duke |

I am running Honda HP4M 10w40. I did switch back to Honda because I was not impressed with the performance of the Rotella and Valvoline. I have wondered if changing oils could have had a negative effect.

Please let us know how it went. I am thinking about doing the same thing this winter.
By the way, how clear is the shop manual? I was looking online and found a Clymer book on the T, and i was not sure which one was better. I have moderate mechanical aptitude, and i think this is something i'd like to try. Good luck, Mike |

Mike,
I have a Clymer that came with my T and I never use it. First purchase for my bike was a Honda Service Manual. It is thorough and easy to follow. I would recommend the Service Manual. So far I have opened up the right side and removed the plates/discs. The outer most disc was metal to metal. I will install the new ones as soon as the gaskets arrive. My shop got the plates and springs in today already. Dano |

Is there a way to shim the clutch springs(.020" to .050" to increase the spring rate? i hate my SOFT clutch. please let us know how the new clutch springs hold. can you do a speed shift in to 5th and does the clutch grab tight(no slipping).

Re: clutch question? | #14 | ||

Got the Barnett clutch in late Friday afternoon. Had a group ride yesterday and they worked great. The clutch lever feels tighter and more responsive. The bike seams to shift better, though that could be in my head.
Installation was realitively easy. The Honda Service Manual covered it well. The only problem I had was having spring bolt break while torquing to spec. Fortunately I was able to pick some up M6x1.00 from the auto parts house and replaced all five to keep them balanced, just reamed the washers out a hair to go over the threads. Stock bolt has a washer installed over before threads and that has a neck down area that created the weak area for the second torquing. I would consider replacing these bolts with new when installing new plates again. At less than $2 each, this would be insurance not to have the stress of dealing with extracting a broken bolt. I hope to get a lot of enjoyable miles out of this clutch. Dano |
