20k on my elite3 |
Lead | ||

I just recently passed the 20k mile mark on my valk size elite3 rear tire. I expect to get a couple thousand more miles as they are not yet to the wear bars. I
am sold on these tires combination of wet weather handling, dry traction and longevity. Has anyone passed the 20k mark on their elite 3s yet?????

Thanks Rick,
I think the key is checking my tire pressures weekly and keeping the rear at 42psi and front at38. My T rides a little firmer but the increase in tire life is worth it. |

Terry,
It is very good news that you topped 20k already and have more mileage left on your Elite 3 rear tire. I have about 6400 miles on mine so far and it should last me a few years considering I only ride my T half the miles I used to having a second bike now. I do keep the tire pressure in my E3 at 40 psi. Thanks for starting my day off right!

Boy I am glad to hear that since I ordered an E3 Friday. My 206 has 4500 miles on it and I am heading out on a 5000 mile trip later this summer.. I didn't
want to cut it too close on the rubber, hence the new tire.. Sounds like the E3 choice was a good one. I will also remember the tip about the air
pressure...Thanks Bob <><

20,000 miles plus! That is some tough rubber Batman. I am lucky to get 8,000 on my stock Dunlops. Thanks for the good news. Bob

20k? Wow, am I jealous. I only got up to 12k on mine and was even with the wear bars. My front E3 is still rolling after 14k with more to go. With me at 280
lbs, my tires may have a gravitational disadvantage. Even so, it is far better that the performance I got from the D206's.

Low tire pressure and an enthusiastic throttle hand are the quickest way to short tire life.
I'm getting close to 18k on my D206 Elite (Valk size). Not quite to the wear bars yet, but it won't be much longer. To see someone get over 20k on the Elite3 is very encouraging.

Duke, what pressure do you run with? I keep a steady 40 psi front and rear, and check it often.

I run 42 in the back tire and 36-38 in the front. So that's pretty close to what you're running.
Most of my riding with the T is long stretches of empty highways. On my Vulcan which I ride to work daily, the rear tire only lasted about 8k. And that was all the way down to the cords.
That used to be a Pirelli MT66.

OK, let's look at this picture for a second. We have the center 2" down to the cords, while the edges are barely touched. I bet if you ran 25 psi in that tire, you'd get 10k out of it, like I'm getting with my Valk-sized D206's. I double-dog dare you to try it.

Jeepers!
I've been "double-dog dared". How can I say
no?
Maybe if I ran it at 15psi I'd get even more mileage from it? If I flipped it around so it ran backwards, do you think that would also help?

Fifteen might be a tad squishy for you, but since I only run 20 psi in the front... Seriously though, I've been doing this for years without any heat
problems and my tires do last longer.
I've got another great idea. We should send all our old back tires to Fred. He rarely rides on the center of the tread anyway, and there's plenty of tread left on our "chicken strips"

I guess I am closing in on 7,000 on my E3s running at the manufacturer's recommended pressures. The low pressure idea is interesting, but low pressure on
the tires on my sports cars led to side wall break down. Still an interesting idea.

I always thought that running low tire pressure caused an increase in heat buildup, thereby causing premature tire failure. Is that not true?
