So, what exactly is the proper measurement technique for checking oil?
When I first bought the bike, not knowing better, I measured it over on the stand, up to the full line on the dipstick with the dipstick fully screwed in.
Then I either read here or was told at the shop that the bike had to be upright and I was overfilling.
Then I read here that the oil was prone to "foaming" in the T if overfilled.
Then I read here that the dipstick should be unscrewed, not screwed in, and I was underfilling.
All on my little ole lonesome I discovered, either way, that the difference between over on the stand and upright vertical was a difference of almost exactly 1 quart on the dipstick. Fill it to the LOWEST line on the dipstick while over on the stand and, viola, when upright the level is almost exactly at the FULL line.
I know at the shop they fill verticle upright. I think that they also measure with the dipstick screwed fully in. They use hardly more than 3 quart when they do, I think. And, I get sent home with lifter noise. I just added a quart of oil just after coming out of the shop and may add a little more oil still just to see if that's the genesis of my lifter noise.
Frankly, I'm so confused at this point that I'm inclined to returning to the original procedure I developed in total ignorance as I never had a problem with it.
At least I never had lifter noise with my own procedure a la planet Marpesia.
Do you have any certainties about proprieties in this??????????????
