Rear end has a squeaking noise |
Lead | ||
|
I am not sure this is the right place to put this question , because I am not sure where it is coming from . I went for a long ride yesterday and noticed that
I am getting a squeaking noise coming from the back of the bike . I thought I had heard it before on shorter rides , but it seemed to be more prevalent
yesterday after riding about 2 hours . On the way home I heard it alot more , but it might just be that I was more aware of it being there . I looked at the
rear brakes and they have plenty of meat on them , and the previous owner said they were new when I bought it about 500 miles ago . I am wondring if there are
any common sources of this type of noise on this model , or other things to check on it . I did search here and found a few posts suggesting the drive shaft be
cleaned and greased , Is this somthing I should be able to do or does it need to go to the shop ? Are there any other things to check for ? Thanks for any
input you might have on the subject . Shannon

Your wife wasn't with you, was she?

No , She has yet to ride on the T with me . This was an even higher pitch squeal than the normal sound coming from the back seat while riding two up with the
wife .

Any correlation of the noise to what's happening on the bike?
going over bumps, frequency changing with speed, no relation to anything whatsoever.....

No , there really doesn't seem to be . It sounds like the wear indicators on the brake pads , but does not go away when you hit the brakes . I am not even
sure if there are indicators on the rear pads of these bikes , but that is what it sounds like really . It seems to be there at all speeds , and gets louder
the faster you go . I first noticed it at highway speeds , and then started to hear it a lower speeds once I was aware of it . It does seem to have gotten more
noticable , but that could just be because I am paying more attention . I am hoping to get the bike out today for a quick ride if we get a break from all the
rain so I can try to get a better idea of what it might be . I was also thinking about jacking the bike up and running it in the garage so I could try to track
it down , but really hate to do that without a proper lift for the bike .

Any luck checking it out?
Be very very careful running it in gear when lifted on a jack. Many bikes have been launched riderless via this method. Some have been launched through a garage wall! I looked at the spare set of Honda pads I have and it doesn't have any wear indicators. This is not to say one of the spacers, insulators or clips doesn't have a tang that performs this function, but it's not on the pads. That much squealin' I'd think someone put a pig in the saddlebag or the driveshaft needs some attention. Do you know where this bike has been most of its life?

I have not gotten to get it out today yet , it has been raining most of the afternoon out here . I am hoping to get it out in a little while though , the rain
seems to have stopped for now . The bike has been in the Houston area since new . What should I look for on the driveshaft ? Are there grease fittings ? Also
what all has to come off the bike to get to it well enough to tell anything ? I am actually in the process of taking it apart to try to get it cleaned up a
little because I got caught out in the rain the other day and now it is even dirtier than when I go it , so if it is easier to check the driveshaft with the
bags off it should not be a problem anyway . Is there generally a problem with the driveshafts on this model ? I assume you are refering to the u-joints in the
shaft , probaby the rear one ? Is this similar to a truck driveshaft , or is it different ? Thanks for the input , sorry for all the dumb questions . Shannon

I did see that post , but I don't have a manual to look up the proper procedures for servicing the driveshaft assembly , or housing . I had very limited
time to work on the bike today and have not yet really looked at it in depth , it might be more obvious than it sounds . I guess if it is more than I care to
get into right now I can take it to the bike shop up in town and have them put it on a lift and check it out . I am ordering a service manual for it now and
will hopefully get all of the basic knowledge to keep the bike up properly .

Well , I took it out for a ride today and it never made a sound . I only went about 25 miles or so , but it never did make any noise while out today . I will
have to try to make time to take a longer ride tomarrow and see if it comes back .

TRH,
In general, I do not think there is a problem with the T's drive shaft. I have been cleaning out the old grease and replacing with new grease everytime I change a tire. That's usually every 11,000 to 13,000 miles depending on which rear tire I buy. After 72,000 miles I have had no problems with the driveshaft on my T.

Fred,
Are you disassembling the driveshaft and servicing all the splines housed in the swingarm with every tire change? Or did you mean just the spline on the flanged hub that interfaces the wheel to the ring gear (exposed when the wheel is removed)? Dave |

Dave,
I only have serviced the exposed end. So far (72K+ miles), so good. Fred

It has not made niose since the one time I noticed it up in Conroe , and I have managed to get a few decent rides in since then . I did take it to the bike
shop in town and had them grease the driveshaft just as a precaution , sounds like some people do it regularly and some people don't know to do it . I am
not sure which type the previous owner was , so I had it done . The shop didn't say that it was good or bad , just did the job . He was really busy when I
went to get the bike back , so we really didn't get to talk much , I will stop in one day this week and try to see what he thought . I am also not sure if
he did both ends or just the rear like Fred , so I will ask and also try to find out if there is a regular interval to preform this service .
