Just my luck....good and bad |

I have been loosing blood internally for several weeks now. I had a colonoscopy done last Friday that revealed a large pollop near my appendix. Preliminary
tests say it is benign, but due to the size of it, it could still be cancerous. They won't know for sure until they get it out and can open it up for
testing. He will remove about 6" of my lower colon including the appendix and some lympnodes. Looks like I'm gonna be down for several weeks right at
the best time of the year for riding. Doc says minimum of 4 weeks for a motorcycle. I know I should be thankful about finding this before it got any larger,
but the timing stinks for riding. I've only got 2 weeks of riding left before the surgery on the 18th and it now wants to rain everyday.

Good luck with the surgery, hopefully it's a benign growth.

Hey Stan - Just think of all the crap you'll be able to dish out while you're laid up! It is good you caught it early. I'm positive that everything
will turn out for the best. Do what the doctors tell you and you can ride for years to come.

hey stan, couple of things...got the floorboards today and they're going to look great. not going to worry about flipping them up, as they look good on the
bike down all the time and they're not in my way at all when lilllian isn't riding with me.
second thing, my mom just turned 90 in july and found out early august she had the same medical problem as you . her pollop wasn't as big as you're describing, but then again she's 90! bottom line is she's doing great, and i feel confident you'll come through this just fine also. keep the faith and thanks again for the deal on the floorboards, bud |

Something to consider. You might want to check out some other surgeons. Marsha is an RN-CNOR, blah, blah, blah...........Works in surgery with a lot of docs that are totally into laparoscopic surgery. She had a complete hestorectowhatever (where they remove everything) a couple or three years ago. They did it through three small incisions about 1/4" long. Did it "out patient". About two years ago, Marsha's sister, in Lubbock, had a similar problem that you have. She had a pollop so large it was blocking her bowels. They remove it, along with about eight inches of her colon. They did the surgery laparoscopically through three small 1/4" incisions. She was up and around the next day. A friend of mine at church had laproscopic surgery to remove a tumor and a section of his colon about a yaer ago. He had the surgery on Wednesday and was at church on Sunday. My point is. Check to see if you can get it done that way. No. Fine a surgeon that will do it that way! It makes a world of difference in the pain/recovery department. Marsha works with a lot of surgeons and we have come to realize that they are not all what they appear to be. Just because they have a license, it doesn't make them good. Check out your options. Remember. You are the customer. Make danged sure you are getting the best!! Even if you have to travel out of Alabama to a state that has modern medical facilities, it would be well worth it!! (Sorry. I couldn't resist!!) -Dan

I'll take your advice on this, Dan. I have yet to talk to my personal general physician about this in person. I value his opinion and will talk to him next
week. He and the surgeon will team up on this, but he may not have gotten all the critical info on this yet as I just found out the plan late Thursday. I
pushed the date for this back 1 week so to have more time for others input about it.

Stan,
I'll be keeping you in my thoughts. Losing a few weeks of riding is a small cost to have the problem fixed. Your concern over the surgery is understandable. Keep us posted. You know that your friends here will do whatever we can to cheer you up. Even if it's just posting stories about all the glorious riding WE will be doing in YOUR honor. lol You'll be fine, my friend. Stan, Sorry to hear about your upcoming surgery, but will pray that all will be well.. I agree with the advice on seeking other surgical options. I had my
rotator cuff repaired last year lapriscopically(only 1 doc in the area that does it that way). The surgery went well, also the recovery time and after surgery
pain was greatly reduced. Hope you will be up and about soon...Bob <><

I got some promising news on Friday. Thanks to the help from danbgt and his wife, I have been able to locate a laparoscopic surgeon in nearby Birmingham, Al
that can do this via the latest methods. She has determined that it can be done after studying the colonoscopy and CT scan results from the previous physician.
The incision needed to do it this way will now be 3-4" and recovery time cut from 4-6 weeks to less than 2. It pays to check around, and to have good
friends like Dan and wife when in need. Things are looking up.
