I am itchin' to get my ACE project finished...it seems like FOREVER since I've been riding her. But we are making progress, and she's now almost completely primed and ready to paint. I only have the gas tank left to sand and prime. The old rear lighting has been removed, the tear drop tail lights which I am using for turnsignals have been set into the bags, and the holes in the fender from the old lighting have been plugged and welded, and the tombstone tail light has been inset. Her butt is LOOKING COOOOOOL!

Anyhow...on to the shield! We spent some time chopping down the windshield yesterday afternoon. Just in case anyone's been thinking about cutting down their shield, I took photos and short vids of the whole process and put the vid on YouTube last night.

It really didn't take too long to do, and the new edges look just as good as the factory edges did! I swear the guy who owned the bike before me must've been 7 feet tall, because the shield was like a skyscraper! It was dangerous if I had to ride through rain at night, as I could not even raise myself up enough to peek over it at all. It is PERFECT for me now, and will sure give the bike a better look overall. Here's the link to the windshield video.

I am tired of looking at parts instead of riding! John's old CB750 K5 is fun to ride with the baby apes we put on it, but my hand starts to get tired real fast holding that throttle open...

Thanks southside bob. The final picture makes the shield look really low, but I was almost standing while holding the bike up, and the shield is actually a bit higher than it looks in the last pic. I can't wait to test it! Yeah, the Floyd just seemed to work with this project! :)

PS. I moved to VA from St. Pete/Largo last January - I sure miss Fort Desoto and our FL friends! But the mountain roads here are superb, and a heck of a lot less traffic than Tampa area. I DON'T miss Hwy 19 one bit...

I need a higher windshield. Can I have your discarded piece of windshield, the one that looks like a toenail? Can you recommend a stable way to attach the piece you give to me to put on my windshield?

Is that the same way you cut your toenails?

hahahaha, Fred!! Sorry, I believe my hubby discarded the big toenail...

Thank you for your comments, the vids take awhile to put together, but they are a great way to keep track of the steps during projects we've completed. We started shaping my seat today, so perhaps the next vid will be the rebuild of the seat...if not, then I'll just be adding pics to my T's page of the paint progress soon.

Hello E.D. glad to hear from you again. You've been 'gone' for awhile. Your video was top shelf. I love it when there is extreme attention to details.

I am glad that you knew what you wanted to do with your windshield. I have not done so. On my previous bike I installed a sport windshield to take some of the wind off of my chest and make the rides less fatiguing. And it did the job just great. When I bought the Tourer last year it came with a Clearview oversized windshield and I got the stock windshield also. So last year I rode with the Clearview and the effects of the oversized Clearview was really appealing to me. It took me awhile to get use to looking through the windshield instead of over it but the comfort factor of the larger shield was a real plus. No buffeting, no bugs, no fatigue, no need to wear earplugs and I could ride with my visor always open. The negative however was that in the rain the windshield loads up with rain drops and so does my visor because there is no wind to push off the rain drops. The oversized Clearview causes me to ride in a vaccum and so the rain gets on my visor and doesn't get blown off. This one negative feature almost outweighs all the other pluses I experienced.

Because I have the stock windshield, I am tempted to switch the oversized Clearview for the stock windshield just to see and feel the difference. I believe my stock windshield is about 3 inches lower than the Clearview, about the difference that you made to your windshield. Be certain that you get back to us and tell us how much you like the difference.

I really liked the FEEL of having that huge windshield, but I hated the problems in the rain (exactly as you described) and visual difficulties at night with headlight glare.

I had put a Memphis Shades PopTop small shield on my VLX 600, and I loved it because it was just enough to take the pressure of the wind off my head and chest, but there was still quite a bit of noise. It sounds like we've had similar experiences with windshields. I think I'm going to be happy with this change - it's between the PopTop and the "skyscraper" height, so this ought to be juuuuust right.

I'll let you know once I get the bike back together.

Before any one else decides to cut up another tall windshield, I have a 2" shorter than stock Clearview shield that I'll trade ya for it.
