Just letting you know of a muffler idea I just did. I almost bought stock mufflers because my 1100 Tourer's mufflers just had 1 1/2" holes at the end,,with no resonator pipes. So I designed some little gadgets that work to look good and make it sound better. Look at my "Images" for complete instructions. Just a cheap idea that looks alright to keep the bike quiet for me and other 'ear plug' wearing riders out there.

Looks pretty good and an easy fix for those that have cut out the tea pot pipes already.

demanride, GREAT LOOKIN BIKE!!!! I've been thinkin about cutting out my resonators. Is it really loud??? I would like them to be a little louder and not
sound so stock, can't afford the V&H pipes right now, any ideals??? Thanks,Larry

Sounded loud, floppy, and obnoxious. The muffler tips I put on give back some back pressure(maybe not as much as stock) and add a little better tonal quality(also they move the sound way out the back away from the megaphone like muffler end caps and also past the running board which also had bounced the sound up to my ears). My carb has NOT been rejetted. My mechanic re-synched the carbs and set the Idle mix screws to 3 turns out(be careful screwing them in, they could break if you over turned them in and be very costly). I later preferred only 2.75 turns out on the Idle mix screws after doing a little 'home amateur checking' of new spark plug each time checking it at idle, and then another at road speed, and this has stopped the black soot from running too rich at idle. I start it without choke and quickly add it if needed, it has average power(no desire for speeding tickets), 40mpg on mid grade gas, runs relatively quiet and smooth with a rumble, and looks retro.

Hey the pipes look great, they match your bike good job. I just cut mine out, they are a little echoy but I like it much better than stock. Thanks for the

Welcome to the club of chopped off resonators. I got my bike like that so I just had to deal with it as best I could. It's hard to analyze about backpressure specs with dual exhaust that is JOINED TOGETHER AND NOT TOTALLY SEPARATED(WHICH CAN BE CHECKED EXACTLY FOR BACKPRESSURE of each cylinder). I wish they were already 2 into 2 directly. Anyway, with my resonators removed, and my little fabricated piping put back in its place, I only slightly adjusted my idle pilot screws from the original factory setting which are NOW re-adjusted to 2.75 turns out(2.5 is factory setting on 'VT1100T's'(according to my clymer book). So, if some of you are tuning them out 4.5 turns(greatly enriching the FUEL mixture), etc, then I'm wondering if you don't also need to rejet your carbs?? Could you possibly be running LEAN in the other areas of the carb acceleration, which might be making it run hotter,,more dangerous possibly. This was my dilema and why I put a little muffle back at the end of my mufflers(it still is probably a little louder and more open than stock). Also, you might try having a friend put some kind of experimental tubing(even cardboard) of various sizes over the holes to see if you like a 'gun barrel' sound coming out rather than just an explosion out a hole in metal. I did. Also, if anyone has any pics of the cut out resonator and little baffle pipe piece and also any short movie clips of how stock sounded, I'd like to see them at dkw4455 at yahoo dot com. |
