I have been through a couple of Formotion compasses (the fluid leaked out of both of them) and a marine grade PNI compass (like are used in automobiles). Trying to put a magnetic compass on the handlebars is not an easy task if you want accurate readings. The Earth's magnetic field is very weak (~ 1/2 Gauss). In contrast the two magnetic coils produce huge magnetic fields (many thousands of times stronger than the Earth's magnetic field) so that they can generate the 30,000 volts it takes to fire the spark plugs 8 to 55 times per second. As I mentioned the Formotion compasses leaked fluid on my gas tank (not cool), but they did not provide an accurate magnetic heading either, no matter how I tried to adjust them. The PNI compass uses patented technology to sort out the Earth's magnetic field from any other magnetic fields like those generated by the car's radio, but automakers usually try to keep the PNI compasses as far away as possible from the magnetic fields generated inside cars. They usually put them in the rear view mirror. Putting one 1 foot away from the coils that fire the spark plugs as I did when I attached a marine grade Wayfarer to my handlebars did not work so well. I could get accurate readings over about 120° and no more. All readings over the other 240° were way off. I have to give up on it.

What I went to is not a magnetic compass at all. In fact it only works when moving, but it does work fantastically. The compass built into my Garmin Zumo 450 is accurate to 1°. It, as well as the speedometer and the altimeter are very dependable. See picture below. I highly recommend it if you are into seeing exactly what direction you are heading. But if you admit to that, you know you are also admitting to being a Geek. Sorry...
