A 140/70R18? |
Lead | ||
|
Anyone know if a 140/70R18 would be closer to the same size as the OEM 130/80R18? I have seen this size used on some custom baggers. Just curious.

Jim,
A 140/70R18 tire is 1.18" taller and 0.4" wider than a 130/80R18 tire. I do not know if there is enough clearance to put a 140/70R18 tire on a T, but I would guess that turn-in effort and turn-in time will increase when going through the tight turns in your neck of the woods. In other words, I would think the larger tire would not be as easily maneuverable. On the other hand, it would make your speedometer read 4.5% slower than it currently does, which may be a good thing since T speedometers usually read somewhere between 3% and 10% fast.

Fred,
check the batteries in your calculator. I came up with different numbers. 140/70-18=25.7in 130/80-18=26.2in But I think it's moot. I only see that size in REAR tires and not in radials either. BJ, which tire model did you find as a front radial? disclaimer: I'm not saying rear tires cannot be run on the front, but unless you really know what you're doing it's best to stick with the vendors' design intent. edit: I see there is a Metz ME880F (front) in that size. but it's not a radial.

You are right Duke. I should have put the numbers into MathCAD where I could see them easily and the unit conversions are performed automatically. The
140/70R18 is shorter, but wider than the 130/80R18 tire, plus it introduces a further speedometer error of 1.8%.
James, I did not have to look up any of the information. It is all contained in the tire specification. The '140' means 140 mm wide or 5.512". The'70' means 70% as tall as the tire is wide. Thus the total tire height is 2 x 70% x 5.512" + 18" = 25.717". The additional speedometer error is the ratio of tire circumferances which can be reduced to the ratio of tire heights. The additional speedometer error is 26.189/25.717 - 100% = 1.8%. In other words the 140mm wide tire is shorter and smaller around, therefore it must take more than one revolution for every revolution the 130mm wide tire takes.

Its too late in the day for all that math and there is a cold one calling me from the fridge so I will just thank everyone and go relax. BTW, the av is new but
it isn't a new pic. My lovely took it last year in the front yard, but thank for the comps.
