Careful of the late 70's thru early 80's Harley's. I once almost bought a '79 HD from a local. I did some research and talked to a couple of
respected wrenches about it. Word is that these years were the dark years for HD and the bikes were being built by AMF. The quality and the parts availability
fell through the floor. I think '85 is when HD took it back over.......not sure. Might pay you to do some research on this for your self, also.

I think your right about 1985 Stan. I do know 1987 was the last year of the tariff.

Thanks for watching out for me guys.
I've read allot on harleys history over the years. This is what I remember.. They were bought by AMF in 67 and sold back to harley in 81. Harley continued the shovel till 84. In 84 they produced 499 shovels then switched to the Evo.. The deal with AMF was they thought they could compete with the jap bikes if they increased the speed of production. The quality suffered greatly and people were pissed. Even though they slowed the production to pay (a little) more attention to quality the damage had already been done hence the tainted AMF name. With the bad AMF name, Harley bought the company back in 81 and did so for a great price. AMF did sell some real good small bikes but these were actually manufactured in Italy by Aermacchi (my first bike was a Z90 in 75). I think Harley bought a large share of Aermacchi in the early 60s before they sold out to AMF but I'm not to sure about that. I seem to remember some early Aermacchi-harleys. Anyway the late 70s to early 80 Shovels were decent bikes. Oh, someone is coming to look at the ACE on Sunday. Wish me luck! The biggest problem is this Darn Honda gives me nothing to do

Well I have good news and then I have good news.
First the good news. It looks like the ACE will sell this week
And now for the good news. On my search for a Shovel I came across a great buy on a unique bike and could not pass it up. (I like unique ya know) It's a 1998 CMC Rocket 88. For those that don't know CMC (California Motorcycle Company) merged with American Indian Motorcycle Company to form the Indian Motorcycle company as it exist today. I should be able to pick it up this Wednesday. Here are some pictures. |

I don't blame you. I love those spokes. I was impressed by the mileage on the odometer. Obvioiusly this bike was ridden a lot! It certainly does not show
in the bike. It is well kept.
Please get back to us and give us report after you get a few hundred miles under your belt. Congratulations.

DennyB56 wrote:Denny, Congrats on your beautiful new toy. I hope you enjoy it immensely. It sure is a looker. I am not sure you can say that CMC is connected to the Indian Motorcycle Company as it exists today. Back in 1998 CMC did merge with Indian but unfortunately then they went bankrupt in 2003. "Once a buyer couldn't be found to take over Indian, the remnants of the company -- first its building, then its machinery, parts and leftover apparel -- were sold to private buyers or through public auctions. " http://www.ironindianriders.com/indian%20motorcycle%20closure.htm In 2006 Stellican Limited, the London-based private equity firm that revitalized Chris-Craft, did buy the rights to manufacture Indian motorcycles, but since everything that had been CMC and Indian in Gilroy, CA was sold-off, Stellican had to start from scratch except for the model designs. Subsequently Stellican has established an Indian Motorcycle manufacturing facility in King's Mountain, NC.

Good catch Fred.
I miss spoke. I should have said the Indian Motorcycle Company from the early 2000's. I did not realize that Indian was starting up again. I wonder who will be doing the designing and manufacturing? I would love to see Indian start manufacturing there own power plants instead of using S&S units (even though there top notch). But I think that was part of the problem with CMC. They spent so much on R&D they could not recupe the debt. Thats the scuttlebutt anyway. It's going to take some deep pockets to accomplish that I think. Anyway, Thanks for the info and I'll check out the link you provided. There is not much info on the net about CMC. And of course, most of what you hear is hearsay, so.... TLO Denny |

Denny,
It looks to me that Indian is planning on using the round-cylinder engine they developed with S&S back in 2002-2003. That round-cylinder engine development was required by the Court when CMC was granted the rights to produce Indian motorcycles back in 1998, but unfortunately they went under just when that engine was being introduced. It did receive good reviews in the motorcycle press and would be great if the new Indian motorcycle company is using it. Their first model is due out this Fall. You can read about it on their website. http://www.indianmotorcycle.com/ We have had some threads discussing Indian's demise and return if you care to read them. http://hondashadowacetourer.yuku.com/topic/1572 http://hondashadowacetourer.yuku.com/topic/1624 http://hondashadowacetourer.yuku.com/topic/5768 http://hondashadowacetourer.yuku.com/topic/5787
