First the person... my little sister Pam. I was 15 when she was born. By the time she was 2, my father lived in the bottom of a vodka bottle and I was her father figure. Pam was 12 when my daughter was born, with Jessica and Pam thinking of each other as sisters rather than aunt-niece.
The orange blob above her head is a picture of a bunch of hippies in a VW micro bus, carelessly driving down the road. The blob is a large monster, his arms form the mountains and his mouth is open, ready to consume the bus. The picture just came out of my hands and on to the wall. It wasn't until yesterday the I realize the bus was my artistic talent and the monster was society, about to consume my dreams. The blob was inspired by King Crimson's first release which included "The Court of the Crimson King" and "Schizoid Man".The male picture on the left is an attempt at a self portrait, in my minds eye. At one time I had long hair and a beard. The other male picture was one of my attempts to draw Jimi. The Woodstock music of Jimi singing the Bob Dylan tune "Like a Rolling Stone" combined with Sly throwing his hands into the air, making a peace sign and saying "I want to take you higher", and the long fringe on his jacket created the image in my mind.
The cross was made during my 'search for religion' phase. Unfortunately, my search ended up revealing the 'Cash Cow' mentality of some Born Again groups and I left dejected. I managed to find a sense of spirituality which Lou and I discussed at great lengths.
When I drew my pictures, I used monochrome tones, choosing to paint the shadows or parts that were not the picture and let the image manifest itself from the part that I did not paint. I painted another picture of Jimi on a 24x36 dayglow green poster and actually worked under a blacklight to get the picture to form in 3D.
After your mention of getting back to the creativity of my youth, I started reflecting back and think I'm going to "Turn Back the Pages" (Byrds).
