I HEAR A LOUD METAL ON METAL VIBRATING SOUND FROM THE ENGINE AREA. |
Lead | ||
|
I WAS RIDING WITH MY BROTHER WHO HAS A HD ROAD KING AND WE WERE TEARING UP THE HIGHWAY. ALL OF A SUDDEN I HEAR A LOUD BUZZING NOISE COMING FROM THE TOP RIGHT
SIDE OF THE ENGINE. WHEN I AM IN 1ST - 3RD GEAR OR REVVING THE BIKE I HEAR A LOUD SOUND LIKE METAL ON METAL VIBRATING. I RODE THE BIKE HOME 30+ MILES AND IT
STILL HAD ALL THE PUNCH THAT I AM USED TO. I SPOKE WITH A BUDDY OF MINE BRIEFLY AND HE ASSURED ME THAT I HAD NOT BLOWN MY ENGINE AND TO HIM IT SOUNDS LIKE
SOMETHING HAD COME LOOSE. BEFORE I PANIC AND RUN TO THE DEALERSHIP I THOUGHT IT WOULD BE BEST TO CONSULT YOU GUYS FOR ANY IDEAS ON WHERE TO CHECK FOR DAMAGE
CONTROL.

I have that same noise on the right side.I thought it was the primary gear-so I had it replace. It was quiet for 3 days then it just pop up again. Its not always
there.I've always had a lazy lifter on the left side that would pop up once in awhile but it was no big deal -not that loud.but this on the right side was
to loud for a honda-thought for sure it was the primary gear.I'm wondering if its the gas there selling us if theres no lubrication of the valves.I got
some Marval Mystery Oil and put it in the gas tank .I went for a 30 mile ride over our Skyway Bridge and down the interstate running about 75mph.I stopped 20
times on the way back an let it idle never either noise.Yesterday I went for a ride and the lazy lift came back.I'm going to run the Mystery oil in the gas
for at least 4 tank full .Let ya know

Step 1: Unlock the CAPS on your keyboard (all caps is considered yelling).
Step 2: check the bolts that hold the fins on the jugs are tight. I forget what size metric Allen wrench you'll need, but other owners have had them come loose.

Time to get out the old redneck stethoscope (3 ft of old garden hose) and try to pinpoint where the noise is the loudest. Uh, after you check those fin bolts.

Upon further investigation after removing the heat shield and still hearing the noise, I beleave that a baffel or somthing inside of the pipe is loose making the rattling sound. What would be the next step? Buy a new pipe, or go to the muffler shop and let them cut it open to reweld whatever came loose. |

I have checked and secured everything in the area of the noise. | #6 | ||

everything in the area is tight. I have also removed the heat shields, floorboards, crashbars and still i am getting a rattle. the best way I can describe the sound is a cowbell with a vibrator inside. I guess it is time for a trip to the dealer. |

I too have a rattle coming from my bike somewhere. I'm guessing it's something inside the muffler although I've never tried to track it down. It is
not a constant noise, but only hits at certain engine speeds and resonance.
There are thin metal plates underneath each saddlebag that act as heat shields to the mufflers. They are supposed to have a couple of screws in each to hold them down. If the screw go missing, they can vibrate like a reed. The saddlebags come off with 4 bolts. good luck and let us know what you find.

It was a loose component within the exhaust system. It drove him nuts trying to find it. If you tried using the Yuku search engine and can get through all the responses, I am sure you will find the thread where he told us how he found the rattle. I admit the search engine produces an overwhelming amount of "hits". Good luck finding your rattle.

I found a broken drill bit inside my right muffler. The previous owner had tried to drill the baffles to make it louder. He also forgot to replace all of the
fasteners. Once I cleaned it out and replaced the bolts, it was fine.

THE DEALER SAID THAT SOMETHING INSIDE OF THE PIPE HAS COME UNWELDED AND HE TOLD ME THAT I AM GOING TO NEED A NEW SET OF PIPES. HE SAID THAT THEY WILL INSTALL A
NEW SET OF VANCE AND HINES PIPES, AND A JET KIT ALL FOR ONLY $950 + TAX. NOW HERE IS THE KILLER. I CAN ORDER JUST THE FRONT EXHAUST PIPE FROM BIKE BANDIT FOR
ONLY $395.00. NOW I AM LIKE EVERY WORKING MAN IN AMERICA, IM TRYING TO SAVE $$$$$$$$, SO I RIDE MY MOTORCYCLE 80 MILES ROUND TRIP TO WORK TO END MY DEPENDENCE
ON IMPORTED OIL BUT THESE PRICES FOR TIRES AND MAINTANCE ON MY TOURER, I MAY JUST BREAK EVEN WITH MY F150 AND $4 GAS. THINK ABOUT IT. I BOUGHT A ELITE 3 REAR
TIRE AND HAD IT INSTALL, THE BILL CAME CLOSE TO $300. I COULD GET 4 COOPER TIRES FOR $450. $395.00 FOR A EXHAUST PIPE OR FLOWMASTER FORCE II EXHAUST FOR $350.
$600 FOR A MUSTANG SEAT OR A TONNEAU COVER FOR $695. DECISIONS, DECISIONS. BUT ALL I NEED TO KNOW FOR NOW IS, DOES ANYONE WITH VANCE AND HINES PIPES WANT TO
SELL THE OLD HEADDERS.

When you had the rear tire put on at the dealer..........did they provide the Vaseline, or did you have to furnish it yourself? LOL Price sounds about 60
bucks too high.
If you are riding the bike only to save money on fuel, then you are only going to about break even if you have the dealer do all the maintenance work on it. Doing your own can save you some serious dough if you are mechanically inclined and can do it yourself. I guess that to justify whether riding a bike is worth it all vs taking the cage........you have ask yourself which one provides the greatest fun factor.

Hey Freddie, nice to meet you. It never hurts to check your area to see if anyone id dealing in slavage motorcycles. I've never bought anything for my T,
but we've had some good luck finding parts for my brother-in-law's Kawasaki and his son's Honda. Just a suggestion. As for the exhaust dilemma,
I'd stick with the stock, or see if you can find a used set of aftermarkets. Good Luck!

Freddie,
Like Alepel said I think a few people on here have took it to the muffler shop had them drill a hole or two and weld the inner and outer pipes together for a cheap fix. IIRC it is a double wall pipe; the inner pipe breaks free and is rattling. the same thing happens to many last gen camaros and firebirds. and the cheap fix is the same. if you go new ServiceHonda.com has part 18150-MBC-003 for "only" $293.62 bike bandit is usually close to list price. good luck.

I think that it would be best to order the OEM heads from hondaservice.com. I would go with the Vance and Hines but I have the Rumblers that I got on Ebay just
last Christmas for $167 and a set of Cobra floorboards that I also got on Ebay for $100. After viewing the threads about Cobra floorboards and the V&H
pipes not working together without hammering the pipes I feel this is the best option for me.

WENT TO THE MUFFLER SHOP AND DUDE FIXED ME RIGHT UP FOR $25. HE SAWED TWO SLOTS INTO THE FRONT HEADER PIPE (1 TOP, 1 BOTTOM) AND WELDED THE INSIDE PIPE TO THE OUTER PIPE. AFTER RIDING WITH THE COW BELL I SWEAR I CAN STILL HEAR THE RINGING SOUND BUT IT IS MUCH BETTER. |
