motorcyle parking request |

I'm thinking of starting a petition for motorcycle parking in the parking lot at work. After searching for about 45 minutes, I haven't found much in
the way of good diagrams, spec, or pictures. I wanted to propose the sign, the marking, and the metal kickstand strip. Does anyone have any pictures or
diagrams to offer?

Most motorcyclists that ride enough to commute to work do a pretty good job of policing themselves in terms of parking. Just a reserved area with crosshatched
markings is adequate. A metal strip or just having the area done in concrete is preferred. Otherwise, a few galvanized electrical box cover plates will do the
trick.
Your challenge will be to show the facility management there is a need and benefit to having motorcycle parking. A well penned proposal discussing things non-riders may not be aware of such as security, kickstands and asphalt, getting bumped by cars, etc are things to point out. The benefit to the facility is the reduced potential for liability from damage/theft/accidents and it promotes more economic commuting (if the company cares about the environment). These days, you may even try to wrap a "green" bow on it and also propose preferred parking for carpoolers and hybrid vehicles. Good luck.

Thanks. I can't wait to show that sign! The "green" thing is probably the most convincing at this point.

We have what you propose at work, it's seperated by curbs from the cage parking. There is a 5" angle iron with 1/2" rod welded across the web
every 3' for cable or chain locks. It runs around the perimeter ot the 30x40 foot area. At the other end of the facility there is also bike parking
against the wall well marked as (MOTORCYCLE PARKING ONLY)with the same iron for security. This area is asphalt so there are 4" plates for the kick stands.
We have had no cage violators. We respect their rights and they ours. Maybe the fear of flat tires keeps them in line
Sometimes there is upwards of 40-50 bikes between the areas.
I can get pics if you need.

Our company establishes it motorcycle parking area in the Spring around April 1st. The area is equal to about four parking stalls wide and two stalls deep. The
area is located the closest to the entrance as possible. I do not know if this serves as a security measure, but it sure makes everyone envious that the bikes
can park close to door. No security measures, like poles for chaining are in place. The parking lot is heavily monitored by security cameras, that may act a
deterent.

Security has not been a problem here. Bikes are currently scattered around the parking lot taking up car spaces. A few pictures would be great if you have time to take a few snaps! Thanks, Rich |

Something I forgot to include...
Some cage drivers get all bent when reserved m/c parking is granted and will park their 4-wheelers in there to be spiteful. There is often little to nothing the facility management or security can do about these parking violations (it's not like handicap reserve parking). Some bollards placed 3-4ft apart would nip this problem in the bud.

They once stole a van from the lot and loaded 3 bikes into it. All this was done with security guards patrolling the lot. Rich, I'll get some shots tomorrow for you. Post em here or you want me to email them to you ? PM me with an address if you want mail.
