turn signals/brakes not working

HSATF Member Posts: 6 05/19/08 11:59 AM	Tags : None HELP! Everything was working fine this morning when I left for work. Tried the horn when passing a buddies house ( did not work) which has happened before. Lights are on in the front, but when I use the turn signal, nothing happens. The light which should be blinking just goes out. When I got to work I checked the brake and back turn signals, Nothing. I tried reading through anything in here that might be related, but at work, my time is limited. Can anyone clue me for tonight when I get home? It did not seem like this happens to a lot of people, so I seek your wisdom. I am not mechanically inclined, but I am not afraid to get my hands dirty with proper guidance. Oh, I'm the new guy from Ohio. Thanks for the kind welcome in the new member. I haven't been on in a while.

HSATF Tail Gunner Posts: 196 05/19/08 12:10 PM	First check the fuses to see if you have a blown one. Then start a visual inspection of the wiring starting from the lights. Look for broken/burned wires...... black "flashes" where the wiring harness gets near bare metal or blackened connectors. Looking at connectors, see if any of them have turned green. Green is corrosion which does an effective job of blocking electricity. Remember that learning to be a mechanic by yourself on your own bike is a very slow and sometimes expensive method.

HSATF Member Posts: 6 05/20/08 6:15 AM	Well thank God it was only a blown fuse! I appreciate the advice. Odd thing was there was a 25, where it calls for a 10. I used one of the spares (10) and everything worked fine, until I tested the horn, it blew the fuse again. I put another 10 in, and will not use the horn until I either replace it or troubleshoot to see if it is the switch that is the issue. Thanks again for the quick response to a newbee in panic mode!

HSATF Tail Gunner Posts: 196 05/20/08 6:57 PM	Now the easy way to test the horn wiring. Disconnect the horn and push the button. If the fuse blows there is short somewhere. Is it a very loud aftermarket horn? If so it may be drawing too much current. So it needs its own fused circuit with its own relay. Or the horn may just be bad; a new loud horn from the Pep Boys may be the answer.
