Oil Change |
Lead | ||
|
Hello. I just found the HSATF and joined. Glad to be in the company of other Tourer owners. I've put 20,000 miles on my '98 Tourer since buying it
used in 2000. I'm not an enthusiastic mechanic -- I'd rather take it to the shop than work on it myself -- but I figure I should be able to change the
oil. It looks like I need the proper spin on filter from the dealer. Will any 10W40 motor oil do, or do I need something special? Also, I don't see a
drain plug, so I'm assuming the oil drains out the filter opening. Can I do the oil change with T on its sidestand? This may sound very basic and
moronic, but like I said, I prefer to ride than work on my bike.
Thanks in advance for any advice, and I'm glad to be here. Dave |

Most automotive oils contain friction modifiers and will cause clutch slippage. There are a number of oils that are compatible for wet clutch applications. I
used Rotella diesel oil with great results like smoother shifting. You can use either the dino version, or the synthetic version w/o any problems. Of course
there is the Honda GN4 oil from the dealer that works. Mobil 1 has a motorcycle specific oil as well as Valvoline.
This site will give you a cross reference for the auto filters that will also fit your bike. Just look for your bike (VT1100 Shadow), and the number beside it (5) is the reference number your need. Scroll to the bottom of the page and under category #5 you will see all the filters that will fit your bike in category(5). The ones in blue are the best. http://www.calsci.com/motorcycleinfo/FilterXRef.html Stan "We are different - yet we are the

raetzd.....welcome to the forum. Where have you been since 2001 when the forum started. Don't know too much about you except your oil changing abilities.
Hope that you'll tell us more about yourself, your family and some of your motorcycle riding experiences. Where do you live by the way.
Well once more welcome to the forum. I'm looking forward to 'talking' with you more in the future.

Thanks for the welcome. I live in the Detroit area. I'm 57 yrs old and started riding only 8 years ago. Started with a Honda Nighthawk 550 and found out I
loved riding. When I started taking trips with a local group, I realized I needed some luggage capacity. I searched all the MC manufacturer sites and
discovered the ACE Tourer looked like the perfect machine for my needs. Then I found out it was in its final year of production so I started searching ebay for
that specific model and finally found one in my area, a '98 with 2300 miles. I'll post a photo once I figure out how to do that. I've trailered my
T to Daytona's Bike Week two or three times, driven in a group ride to West Virginia, Ohio and Ontario. I've added floor boards, but it's otherwise
pretty much a stock bike. I love it. It now has 24,000 miles. It appears from the message board that there are many T owners in Michigan. I'd like to hear
from them. Dave in Rochester Hills

Dave.....thanks for telling us more about yourself. Another Michigan member. How wonderful is that. My sister in law lives in Lake Orion and my wife and I
visit two or three times a year. I like to try to hook up with the forum members living around Detroit when I can. Earlier this year I met with Rabbi Glenn and
alans 98T. There are quite a few active Michigan members. Click on this link Forum Roster
then scroll down the page until you come to the list of forum members by State. You'll come to Michigan. I believe that the list is missing two new
members from Michigan that have joined along with you in the past couple of months. So all total my guess is that there are about 6 - 7 active members you
might be able to hook up with. One of you guys needs to plan a rally. There are certainly enough of you to have a good size group get together. And who knows I
might ride in to.
I believe that there is a small gathering going on this Saturday, Sept 20th in Detroit area that could give you a chance to hook up with some forum/Tourer owners. Check out this link too for particulars on this event. Irish Hills Ride

As for draining your oil - there is a drain plug - keep looking. There is a whole section devoted to oils and lubricants so I won't get in to that argument
again. Welcome to the forum Dave.

Just a hint about finding the drain plug. It is on the side of the stand and hides behind a hose. The hose typically has a protective casing around it. I place
my bike on it's side stand and lay down to find it. I think it is 17mm...Bob <><

And don't forget to check your oil with the bike standing upright. I have a 2" block of wood that I place under the kickstand for
draining/filling/checking the oil.
